In a response to a topic in an online discussion, I used the term “Identity Politics Reform” to describe the Moorish Movement in general, and the objective of Act 6 of our Divine Constitution and By-Laws in particular. In fact ALI’S MEN has coined two phrases in connection to the earthly/national side of the movement: Identity Politics Reform and Asiatic Political Capital Acquisition. We in ALI’S MEN feel very strongly that when the Prophet described the movement as being “…the only sole foundation that all Asiatics must depend upon for their earthly salvation as American Citizens…”, and his work of record in conjunction with said statement, that our phrases Identity Politics Reform and Asiatic Political Capital Acquisition neatly sum up the Prophet’s means of making good on the quoted statement.
Identity Politics Reform for us, in short, entails effecting a complete social eradication of the culturally ambiguous labels (negro, black, colored, African-American, etc.) and thereby shedding the deplorable and negative stigmas that are permanently attached to these labels-and permanently attached to US as long as we are attached to them. In a recent Interfaith meeting I was asked to explain the Moorish movement to the members and participants. After explaining the “negro problem/African-American Dilemma” to them as being an absence of social significance due to an absence of cultural identity, they asked me how I “self-identified”.
As a short aside, the power of social “self-identification” has been wielded to phenomenally great effect in America by the LGBT community. In fact, by using it they have effectively drawn a clear distinction in society between sexual preference and self-identification, as it relates to their community and issues. At least for them, the RIGHT to self-identify affords a near-impregnable social shield that they also effectively use to influence policy-making to their advantage.
Back to the Interfaith meeting, when asked how I/we self-identify, I proudly said “MOORISH AMERICAN…descendants of Moroccans and born in America.” The entire body of meeting participants glowed and beamed in admiration, then began spontaneously offering testimonies to the greatness of the Moors, especially the debt owed to them by Europe (I was the only Asiatic present). After they calmed down, one European woman said “well you couldn’t have picked a better group of people to identify with.” Perceiving mild cynicism, I replied “we could have simply made up a nationality, and if enough of us supported it we’d be successful, but this one just happens to be ENTIRELY TRUE,” and once I explained WHY and HOW we are descent nature to Moroccan Empire is political and cultural as opposed to solely racial/ethnic, they all sat there silent with mouths agape. The next questions they all had related to how THEY could assist in getting ALL of our people this information about themselves. One of them said “what you have explained to us tonight Mr. Bey is the ONLY SOLUTION to fix the quality-of-life issue with the African-American community. Whoever came up with this strategy is BRILLIANT.”
…to which I replied “PRAISE ALLAH FOR PROPHET NOBLE DREW ALI.”
Prophet Drew Ali in the Moorish Guide stated spoke to the fact that the possession and active use of the press is our greatest weapon; we can depend on no one to tell our story the way we need it to be told but us, and the aggressive pushing of OUR STORY is a primary way to exercise our power to socially automate ourselves to our benefit, thereby re-shaping the cultural, social, economic and political landscape in conformity to our will, which as Moorish Americans is the will of Allah through His Prophet Drew Ali.
